Description

Beautifully restored Stone House and historic Overlook Cabin on an authentic working Montana ranch in the gorgeous Madison Valley south of Ennis. Blue ribbon fishing access on nearly a mile of both the main Madison River and a channel of the river that's mixed with the waters of Blaine Spring Creek.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Originally built in the early 1900's, this unique stone ranch house was fully restored in 2007 to its original beauty. Gorgeous wood floors, restored original woodwork trim throughout the home, historic style lighting fixtures and tasteful artwork are just some of the details that add to the overall sense of history at the property. The authenticity and quality of the restoration has allowed the Thextondale Homestead to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Stone House and accompanying Overlook Cabin are located on an authentic, working Montana ranch several thousand acres in size. Guests staying at Thextondale will enjoy the use of a huge yard about two acres in size immediately surrounding the Stone House and Overlook Cabin. In addition, guests enjoy access to approximately 100 pristine acres of the ranch via walking trails and foot bridges leading down to nearly a mile of fishing access and wildlife viewing along the Madison River and the Madison/Blaine Spring Creek channel. The bird and wildlife watching, as well as the fly-fishing opportunities, are truly second-to-none!

BEDROOMS/BATHROOMS: The home has three bedrooms and three full bathrooms. On the main level of the home is one of the bedrooms, with a luxurious king size bed and attached bathroom with a shower/tub combo. This bathroom is accessible from the living area of the home also. Upstairs, guests will find another bedroom with an equally luxurious king size bed and attached private bathroom with shower/tub combo. Across the hall is the third bedroom, which is set up with two queen size beds and in the hallway is a full bath with a walk-in style shower. For flexible sleeping space there are two sofa beds in the Overlook Cabin.

KITCHEN/DINING: This wonderful kitchen has all the modern conveniences - yet still retains the home's old fashioned charm. The chef of your group will find all the high quality cookware and serving ware that any meal may need. Happy cooking! A formal dining room with gorgeous built in china cabinets is located just off the kitchen. The spacious table will easily seat a group of eight. This beautiful dining area has dining room chairs that are extraordinarily comfortable!

LIVING ROOM: A spacious living room is located off the dining room, in the home's 'front parlor room.' Cozy sofas with windows looking out across the native landscaped yard and to the main ranch beyond provide a great place to relax at the end of the day. Guests will find a nice flat screen television with satellite service and DVD player.

OVERLOOK CABIN: Additional space for relaxing, as well as sleeping space for one or two more guests, is available in the Overlook Cabin just across the yard from the main house. This sweet cabin has been reconstructed from an old log tack barn. It includes an open living space with two comfy sofas and a harvest style dining table for meals and playing games. A small, propane fired stove can be used to warm up on a chilly evenings.

LOCATION: The Historic Thextondale Homestead is located approximately 5.5 miles south of Ennis, and fifty miles north of West Yellowstone - one of the main entrances to Yellowstone Park. There is an airport in West Yellowstone, as well as in Bozeman, which is about 58 miles from the home.

A Piece of Heaven Nestled in the Madison River Valley

My wife, grown daughter, and I stayed at this most amazing home for a week and had an incredible week. Located about 10 minutes outside of the quaint small town of Ennis, MT, this home is situated on several acres of land overlooking a beautiful tributary of the Madison River. Open the back door and you truly can understand why Montana is called the "Big Sky" state because the vista is absolutely "picture postcard" like. The "painted sky" sunsets are breathtaking and different every evening! On any give day we saw deer, eagles, antelope, ground squirrels, osprey, and countless different types of songbirds. The house is a historical gem that has been lovingly cared for, restored, and furnished. It is first class" all the way. Kitchen is well stocked and set up to cook--not a detail missing. Beds are extremely comfortable. Bathrooms are appointed to the level of a 4-5 star hotel, including extra soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. Towels are of nice quality and there is more than a generous supply! All around VERY nicely done!Couple of things to note: For the traveler who needs a TV in EVERY room, this may not be the house for you. There is SAT TV and a single large screen TV in the living room, but no other TV's in the house. For us, that was perfectly fine. We enjoy watching TV together. For the family with smaller children who have divers TV requirements, it would be a challenge. The house is equipped with wireless internet which is adequate for internet research and email. However, if you need bandwidth and speed for gaming or streaming TV or videos, you will find yourself frustrated. But, did you really come all this way and make the investment to sit inside and game? I hope not!Go exploring, learn to fly fish, take a drive, visit Yellowstone, or see Virginia City. There is a tremendous amount to discover!

We rented this house at first simply because it was only a few miles from our son and family. Turned out to be much better than expected. We come to the area 2-3 times a year and love the Madison River area. This is not your ordinary rental on the Madison River.Wonderful Historic House in a beautiful setting with 360 degree views. Lots of safe flat lawn area for our grand children to play. Interesting walk down to the creek that flows to and from the Madison. Great fishing. Owners went extra mile with books, videos, brochures, as well as information on the property itself. Old style bath fixtures in bathrooms with high water pressure with steaming hot water. Easy drive to Ennis. House sits inside Ranch which gives rural feel in addition to vacation home feel with access to Madison. Best of both worlds. Good Wi Fi and cell service. Coming back in summer to enjoy the restored cabin and eating area alongside. Everything was "just right".

Manager's Response

Thank you for your for leaving such a nice review. I was able to stay at the Historic Thextondale this fall and had many of the same thoughts.. The home was warm, inviting, and truly unique. I stayed with family but hope to return for a girls weekend! We look forward to hosting you again next summer!

My friends and I absolutely loved this property. The main house is beautiful and the view from the cabin out back is over the top.

Manager's Response

Hi Todd - The view from the deck of the river view cabin makes me feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Montana is full of gorgeous views, but that view is one of the best! We're glad that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for being our guests! - Suzy

I would rent this house again in a heart beat. We loved the home. It is remodeled to create a look of authenticity, yet it is comfort for the 21st century all the way from the fine bedding and huge bathrooms to the flat screen TV. Great setting on the creek although I found the trout illusive. Maybe next time they will take my fly!

Manager's Response

Hello cowgirl! We agree that Thextondale homestead is a luxuriously renovated home. Thank you for being our guest and we hope you can come back...and that the fish are nicer to you next time! - Suzy

Thextondale is a lovely home away from home. It has superb access to fishing and is only a short drive from Ennis, and an hours drive from Bozeman. Yellowstone is a bit further away, but can be accessed for day trips if you don't mind the drive. If you are planning to cook, suggest stocking up on food on the way in (Albertson's or Rosauer in Bozeman). Ennis has a supermarket, but does not stock a wide variety of items. The house sleeps six people comfortably and provides good facilities for home cooking, including a gas BBQ. We have now stayed here two times and love the location and the house itself. Thoroughly recommend it if you are into fly-fishing, hiking, open space and the outdoors in general and want to sit by the river, watch the deer cross the river and enjoy the phenomenal sky!

Manager's Response

Hello London - We're so happy that you enjoyed your stay at Thextondale Homestead. We love that home and location as well. Thank you for being our guests! - Suzy
UPDATE: Ennis now has a better grocery store. You could do all of your shopping here if you wanted to. There's also a great specialty meat market in town that also has a great gourmet food selection.

Exceeded all Expectations.
