BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This incredibly handsome lodge is built at the location of the fishing scenes in the classic movie “A River Runs Through It” in the Gallatin River Canyon between Bozeman and Big Sky. There are stunning views of the cliffs and the summit of Storm Castle from almost every room. From the deck you’ll enjoy the sound of the river just down the slope, pines all around, and the view across the river to the rock wall of Castle Rock. In addition to the lodge’s beautiful décor, you’ll enjoy a great stereo system, a 42” TV in the great room and in each bedroom, along with satellite internet throughout the lodge.

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS: The home has four bedrooms and extra sleeping space in two different areas – the den and the loft. The lodge has 3.5 baths. The master bedroom, just off the great room, has a king size bed, double doors to the deck and the river, and a private bath with two sinks and a large shower with a river pebble floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a loft. The bedrooms have a king and a queen size bed and the loft has a queen sleeper sofa. These areas share a bath with a tub & shower, 2 sinks and a large closet. At the other end of the home, the bunkroom has two sets of bunk beds, one a double/twin, the other a twin/twin setup. The attached TV room is a great kid zone with a TV/DVD/satellite setup. The bunkroom also includes a bath with tub and shower. The last sleeping space is a queen sleeper sofa in the den off the great room. There’s also a half bath just off the kitchen.

KITCHEN AND DINING: The well-appointed kitchen has granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a large walk-in pantry. There is a bar counter that seats 4 for chatting with the cook, and the dining table that seats 10 comfortably. There is also a gas barbecue for your outdoor grilling.

GREAT ROOM: The great room has an amazing bank of windows looking out to the river canyon. There’s a vaulted ceiling, a large stone wood burning fireplace, comfortable seating for a crowd, and a wet bar with a fridge and sink. It’s a wonderful room for gathering! There’s a stereo, iPod docking station, TV, DVD, and in-wall speakers for stereo and TV surround sound.

OFFICE: If you need to do a bit of work during your stay, you’ll enjoy the very comfortable den just off the great room. It’s equipped with comfortable seating, a nice built in desk, and wireless satellite Internet. Due to the home's location, internet streaming and downloading may not be guaranteed also there is no cell phone service at the home.

SETTING, ACREAGE, AND VIEWS: This lodge is situated at the filming location for the great fishing scenes in the classic “A River Runs Through It”. Hollywood chooses locations carefully, and they did well on this one.

OUTDOOR AMENITIES: The highlight is a large deck accessed from the great room, dining room and master bedroom. From this vantage point, you’re looking up at the incredible cliffs and down towards the Gallatin River. With a picnic table in the yard, a hot tub & stereo speakers on the deck, it’s a perfect place to spend your evenings.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: Besides fishing right out the door, hiking, skiing and whitewater rafting are nearby. One of our favorite river outfitters is just up the road, and there are great hiking trailheads within a few miles. Big Sky and Moonlight Basin Ski areas are about 30 minutes away. Be sure to check out Yellowstone National Park!

Great place

First time in Montana with family of 7. We loved this house. It is large, spacious, and was stocked with a lot of daily essentials. The kitchen had all the spices you would need and a lot of paper towels, garbage bags, TP, etc.. We only needed to buy food and drink. There are closets with tons of extra pillows, blankets, etc to use. In the canyon (and this house) you will not get cell reception but it does have Wi-Fi to get texts and email. It won't be fast enough to stream movies. It is 1 hour from Yellowstone and maybe 30 minutes from Bozeman. Google Maps took us right to the house from the airport. Bozeman has Walmart and all the major food chains. Big Sky is the other way and maybe 20 minutes. There are 4 or so restaurants there but check their hours of operations before you drive there. Some were closed at 2:00 when we came thru to eat. Montana Whitewater Co is 200 yards from the house. They were great. The place to go for whitewater, fly fishing guides, horseback tours, etc. The Gallatin is in the back yard down a steep path, you have to be a little careful getting there. There was not enough open shoreline to fly fish from the bank there, but also the river was still high and fast when we came. Maybe in the summer you can wade out in it but now everyone said stay out of it. Overall we loved this place and the owners did this rental right. We would certainly come back.
Hello John - Thank you for your glowing review of Crooked Canyon and the area.! And you are right in your guess that the water level drops in the Gallatin to the point where standing and walking on the bank is very doable. Typically that happens by about the Fourth of July, but spring through June can be very high (and thus not very good fishing) water. Thanks again for being our guests and we hope that you'll be back soon! - MH Team

what a place for family to gather to celebrate a big birthday. There was lots of room for small ones and large ones and a beautifully appointed kitchen for large meal prep and space for us to sprawl and relax. Also a perfect location for our fishing outings, tons of hiking and Yellowstone adventures. And the backyard complete with the beautiful Madison river and a hot tub!! Wish we could rewind and do it all over again....
Wendy, thank you for your review. We are delighted that the whole family enjoyed their time in Montana and their stay at Crooked Canyon Lodge- The River House. Happiest of birthdays and we hope to see you all again very soon! -Krista/Mountain Home Team
