Crooked Canyon Lodge- The River House

Stunning lodge below Storm Castle Peak, one of the prettiest spots in the scenic Gallatin River Canyon.

A hot tub is just above the river for relaxing after a day of skiing, fishing or hiking.

Seven night minimum during the summer with Saturday arrival and departure. Book with Crooked Canyon Lodge- The Cabin next door to accommodate larger groups.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This incredibly handsome lodge is built at the location of the fishing scenes in the classic movie “A River Runs Through It” in the Gallatin River Canyon between Bozeman and Big Sky. There are stunning views of the cliffs and the summit of Storm Castle from almost every room. From the deck you’ll enjoy the sound of the river just down the slope, pines all around, and the view across the river to the rock wall of Castle Rock. In addition to the lodge’s beautiful décor, you’ll enjoy a great stereo system, a 42” TV in the great room and in each bedroom, along with satellite internet throughout the lodge.

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS: The home has four bedrooms and extra sleeping space in two different areas – the den and the loft. The lodge has 3.5 baths. The master bedroom, just off the great room, has a king size bed, double doors to the deck and the river, and a private bath with two sinks and a large shower with a river pebble floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a loft. The bedrooms have a king and a queen size bed and the loft has a queen sleeper sofa. These areas share a bath with a tub & shower, 2 sinks and a large closet. At the other end of the home, the bunkroom has two sets of bunk beds, one a double/twin, the other a twin/twin setup. The attached TV room is a great kid zone with a TV/DVD/satellite setup. The bunkroom also includes a bath with tub and shower. The last sleeping space is a queen sleeper sofa in the den off the great room. There’s also a half bath just off the kitchen.

KITCHEN AND DINING: The well-appointed kitchen has granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a large walk-in pantry. There is a bar counter that seats 4 for chatting with the cook, and the dining table that seats 10 comfortably. There is also a gas barbecue for your outdoor grilling.

GREAT ROOM: The great room has an amazing bank of windows looking out to the river canyon. There’s a vaulted ceiling, a large stone wood burning fireplace, comfortable seating for a crowd, and a wet bar with a fridge and sink. It’s a wonderful room for gathering! There’s a stereo, iPod docking station, TV, DVD, and in-wall speakers for stereo and TV surround sound.

OFFICE: If you need to do a bit of work during your stay, you’ll enjoy the very comfortable den just off the great room. It’s equipped with comfortable seating, a nice built in desk, and wireless satellite Internet. Due to the home's location, internet streaming and downloading may not be guaranteed also there is no cell phone service at the home.

SETTING, ACREAGE, AND VIEWS: This lodge is situated at the filming location for the great fishing scenes in the classic “A River Runs Through It”. Hollywood chooses locations carefully, and they did well on this one.

OUTDOOR AMENITIES: The highlight is a large deck accessed from the great room, dining room and master bedroom. From this vantage point, you’re looking up at the incredible cliffs and down towards the Gallatin River. With a picnic table in the yard, a hot tub & stereo speakers on the deck, it’s a perfect place to spend your evenings.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: Besides fishing right out the door, hiking, skiing and whitewater rafting are nearby. One of our favorite river outfitters is just up the road, and there are great hiking trailheads within a few miles. Big Sky and Moonlight Basin Ski areas are about 30 minutes away. Be sure to check out Yellowstone National Park!

We rented this house for a large family gathering for the spring MSU graduation. Everything was exactly as advertised and then some. Everyone was pleased with the layout, the facilities and the quality of the entire experience. This was by far the best rental property that We have every encountered with nothing left out that a large group would need for a very pleasant stay.
Manager Response:

And we also have very high standards for our homes. They must have character and charm, be in beautiful locations, be well outfitted and impeccably maintained and, lastly, be a place that we could imagine vacationing ourselves. We're glad our standards worked for your family! Please come visit again soon. - Suzy

We rented the house the week of Memorial day 2014. The house is in perfect shape and very well appointed. We spend a few days fishing, a few days hiking and many evenings eating well. The house is perfectly situated between Big Sky and Bozeman and either going out or cooking at home, we had many options. The natural beauty of Montana and views from the house are just great. The Gallatin river is just a short walk out back. We would definately come back and rent again. Very clean and well maintained property
Manager Response:
Hello PJA - First, thank you for being our guests and for putting your trust in us for your precious vacation time. We're so happy to hear that the lodge and its location worked out well for you. It's true - it's in that beautiful swath of country in the Gallatin River Canyon between Big Sky and Bozeman that has so much to offer. We're glad to took advantage of all of it! - Suzy

Donna X.
I rented the house so that my children and grandchildren could spend a week together with me. The weather was glorious and we loved walking down to the river to fish. The house was lovely, very clean, and a perfect set-up with the kids in their own area in the bunk room. We did day trips all over the area (to Yellowstone twice). My only disappointment is, based on the exterior photo, it seems that the house is isolated. It is not--there are other homes close-by on either side. Also the house is just yards from a major highway and we could hear traffic that was often louder than the peaceful sound of the river below. But all in all, a wonderful trip.
Manager Response:
Hello Donna - We're so happy to hear that you had such a special gathering with your grands, and that you enjoyed fishing in the river right there at the lodge. It sure is a beautiful spot! And we're sorry that the location was a bit of a surprise - with regard to proximity to the road and to other homes. (For other guests: we encourage you to take a look at the map for the lodge, where you can zoom in and out to see just where it is, and to call us with any questions). Donna, we hope that you will be our guests again soon, either here or at another home that we care for. - Suzy

This was an absolutely beautiful home that worked great for our family Thanksgiving and celebrating our parents 60th wedding anniversary. The fireplace was wonderful and it had everything we needed for fixing Thanksgiving dinner. It was very well maintained and was in a great location. we'd love to go back in the summer and take advantage of all the activities nearby.
Manager Response:

The house was absolutely beautiful. It was perfect for a multi-generation family vacation. The teens had their own space in the bedroom/living area above the garage. The younger kids were able to stay close to their parents across from the master suite. The kitchen was stocked with everything we need to cook dinner nightly. Waking up to the sound of the birds singing and the Gallatin River rushing behind the house was wonderful. Working with Mountain Home Montana Vacation Rentals was very easy. They even called a few days after we arrived to make sure everything met our needs.
Manager Response:
Hello Richmonds! We love it that you had such a good time and that you were all so comfortable with the layout of the lodge. Thank you for being our guests and we hope that you can come back again soon! - Suzy

We had our annual family gathering in Montana this year. Four generations from age 4 to 82. Crooked Canyon Lodge was the perfect place for our gathering. The home is beautiful and convenient to everything we wanted to do. The home was stocked with absolutely everything we needed...from plenty of linens to plenty of extra toilet paper and everything in between that you can think of. My family came from all over the country and everyone of them felt it was the perfect place for our vacation. We could not be more pleased!!!
Manager Response:
Wow Sharon, thank you for this glowing review of the home! And we're so happy that you enjoyed your stay. We agree that it's a wonderful gathering spot for large families. Thank you too for being our guests and we hope to see you all again sometime. - Suzy

First time in Montana with family of 7. We loved this house. It is large, spacious, and was stocked with a lot of daily essentials. The kitchen had all the spices you would need and a lot of paper towels, garbage bags, TP, etc.. We only needed to buy food and drink. There are closets with tons of extra pillows, blankets, etc to use. In the canyon (and this house) you will not get cell reception but it does have Wi-Fi to get texts and email. It won't be fast enough to stream movies. It is 1 hour from Yellowstone and maybe 30 minutes from Bozeman. Google Maps took us right to the house from the airport. Bozeman has Walmart and all the major food chains. Big Sky is the other way and maybe 20 minutes. There are 4 or so restaurants there but check their hours of operations before you drive there. Some were closed at 2:00 when we came thru to eat. Montana Whitewater Co is 200 yards from the house. They were great. The place to go for whitewater, fly fishing guides, horseback tours, etc. The Gallatin is in the back yard down a steep path, you have to be a little careful getting there. There was not enough open shoreline to fly fish from the bank there, but also the river was still high and fast when we came. Maybe in the summer you can wade out in it but now everyone said stay out of it. Overall we loved this place and the owners did this rental right. We would certainly come back.
Manager Response:
Hello John - Thank you for your glowing review of Crooked Canyon and the area.! And you are right in your guess that the water level drops in the Gallatin to the point where standing and walking on the bank is very doable. Typically that happens by about the Fourth of July, but spring through June can be very high (and thus not very good fishing) water. Thanks again for being our guests and we hope that you'll be back soon! - Suzy

Crooked Canyon is an amazing home with amazing scenery. The house was roomy and beautiful inside and walking down to the river was breathtaking. We had 8 adults in this amazing home and never felt as though we were on top of each other. We would spend all day outside enjoying Montana and all evening fireside playing games. This house is worth the price. We will definitely be back!
Manager Response:
Hello Foy - Oh yay, we're so happy that Crooked Canyon Lodge was a good fit for your group. We love that location and the lodge as well. In fact, that's where we celebrated a 40th birthday weekend for one of our office staff...and that stay was amazing as well. Please come back soon! - Suzy

This is an exceptional home. It was perfect! The family room/kitchen area was more than we could hope for and made for the perfect gathering spot for our extended family group of 13! We loved it and highly recommend. It exceeded our expectations.
Manager Response:
Hi Teri - "As advertised...only better!" I love that! We're so happy to hear that Crooked Canyon Lodge worked for your large family. What is interesting about the lodge's layout is that it works for 13, but groups of 4 or 6 don't feel like they are rattling around in it. It's comfortable for all. Thank you for being our guests and we hope that you can plan to come back with your family again soon. - Suzy

Crooked Canyon Lodge was one of the nicest rentals we have stayed in. The place was spotless and had all the accommodations we needed. The grandkids loved the bedroom above the garage. The hiking trails close to the lodge are fantastic. We loved having the Gallatin River right out the back door. The grandkids spent hours throwing rocks in the river and breaking the ice. I would recommend this place this anyone
Manager Response:
Kevin & Debbie -It sounds like your family really enjoyed their time at Crooked Canyon Lode. We agree that it's a pretty special spot - and we're so glad you got out on the hiking trails even thought it was getting to be wintery there. Your crew really took advantage of the outdoor experiences! We hope that you cna come back again, either in winter or summer - they are both amazing times to be there. - Suzy

The lodge was beautiful, just as described. A lot of open space, beautiful furnishings. Plenty of bedding, kitchen utensils, fire wood, etc. the loft over the garage created a great separate living space. The extra amenities were very helpful, spices, foil, Saran Wrap, etc. Every detail was included.
Manager Response:
Hi Patty - We're so happy that the layout, furnishings and amenities at Crooked Canyon Lodge were all to your liking. We love this lodge and its location - and we agree that the details are pretty amazing. We hope that you can come back soon! - Suzy
