Fun Fall Activities for Everyone

Fall in Montana offers a wide range of activities for every traveler type. The comfortable weather conditions and local seasonal highlights easily make it one of the best times of year to experience everything the region has to offer. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Montana in the fall.

Fall Foliage Hikes

One of the best ways to view the area’s breathtaking fall foliage is by hitting the trails. Consider embarking on one of these scenic hikes during an autumn stay.

Pioneer Falls

Located along Spanish Creek, the Pioneer Falls Trail takes you directly through dense sections of aspen and willow trees before reaching a beautiful waterfall. This relatively flat hike provides an excellent leaf-peeping opportunity in the autumn months.

Sypes Canyon

Set in the Bridger Range just north of Bozeman, Sypes Canyon Trail features quick elevation gain with an immediate reward. A two-mile trek here leads to a stunning overlook of the Gallatin Valley’s vibrant fall colors.

Triple Tree Trail

The Triple Tree Trail is another local favorite and widely considered one of the best spots to view fall foliage in the Bozeman area. In addition to the tranquil meadows and colorful autumn groves, you can expect additional scenic valley vistas throughout this trail, too.

The Active Fishing Season

Autumn is widely considered the best time of year for fishing in Montana. As water temperatures cool, the local trout populations become more active and much more likely to bite.

Fall fishing in Montana takes on a highly technical and satisfying nature. On the Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Madison Rivers, you’ll find world-class fly-fishing environments for both drift-boat casting and wading along the banks. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner learning from a guide, you’ll find that this season offers an unforgettable experience on the water.

Local Hot Springs

As evening temperatures drop, soaking in geothermal waters is an excellent addition to your daily routine. Southwest Montana is home to several natural hot springs where you can adequately unwind after each day’s adventures.

Bozeman Hot Springs features 12 indoor and outdoor pools alongside saunas, steam rooms, and a fitness center. The varying available water temperatures and regular live entertainment make this modern facility a fantastic option for families.

Heading west into the Madison Valley, you’ll find another favorite in Norris Hot Springs. Known locally as “Water of the Gods,” this traditional geothermal pool is complemented by acoustic music performances and an on-site cafe.

Autumn Harvest Adventures

Fall also offers a chance to take part in some great regional agricultural traditions. Each year, local farms and community markets turn the harvest season into a wonderful interactive experience for autumn visitors.

Fall Festival at Rocky Creek Farm

Located just outside of Bozeman, Rocky Creek Farm hosts an annual autumn celebration that’s become a local staple. Visitors can enjoy hayrides through a pumpkin patch, pick their own apples from the orchard, and get an up-close look at cider pressing.

Local Farmers’ Markets

To get an authentic taste of the local community, consider stopping by a farmers’ market. Fresh produce, fall-themed baked goods, and locally sourced meat are great finds during an autumn stay, especially when staying in a unit with a fully equipped kitchen.
